About the keyboard:
On the first models of type writers, the keys were positioned in alphabetic order. Some keys that were used intensively were placed next to eachother, and this caused the hammers to jam.
That's why the keys were re-arranged in the QWERTY order, which is not necessarily the most efficient order to type fast.
In 1932 the DVORAK keyboard layout was invented to type as fast and as comfortable as possible. There are also left and right hand variants for people who have only one hand.
WORKMAN, COLMAN, ...
After that, several alternative keyboard layouts have been invented for different languages and different needs. If you miss one, please let me know and I will investigate if I can add it.
